When the crowds are too much the best thing to do is get up close and personal with your subject. Backlight is difficult to work with if you have a subject that doesn’t let any of the light through. It is either going to be a silhouette shot or a flash situation. With flowers it is much easier to do a backlit shot as the light coming through them shows off their colours. The best time of day for the shot is, as usual, the golden hours. I have never tried shooting flower close-ups at sunrise but the golden light of sunset seems to work really well.
